Flash floods and landslides leave 19 dead or missing in northern region
VOV.VN - As many as 19 people have been reported either dead or missing in the northern provinces of Son La and Dien Bien, as well as in the capital city of Hanoi as a result of flash floods caused by the circulation of Storm Prapiroon.
According to details given by the Steering Committees of Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of the provinces, seven people in Son La, two in Dien Bien, and one in Hanoi were confirmed dead amid floods and landslides, while nine other people were reported missing. In addition, a further nine individuals were also injured due to the extreme weather.
They also reported that 73 houses either collapsed or were swept away, while 1,507 were partly damaged.
Heavy rains and floods also caused damage to over 29,943 ha of rice and crops and killed 11,899 fowls and cattle heads. In addition, 188 ha of aquaculture were damaged.
Over 769 spots were eroded, with 47,383 m3 of rubble collapsing.
Landslides and mud blocked roads caused traffic congestion to build up on National Highway 12, passing through the Linh village area in Muong Pon commune.
The National Center for Hydrological and Meteorological Forecasting reported that heavy rains had stopped in these areas, with the highest temperature reaching up to 37 degrees Celsius. However, the regions would likely see more spells of heavy rains in certain places in the afternoon and evening of July 26 and July 27. Traffic has since resumed to normal levels.
Authorities are now searching for all missing people and working to address any flood damage.
