According to initial information regarding the case, in early May border guards discovered a drugs ring operating across the Vietnam-Laos border. The group was led by several Vietnamese people who were working freelance in Laos.
At 15:00 p.m. on July 23, border guards deployed an undercover force in Lao Bao border town in Huong Hoa district before catching a Vietnamese woman red-handed at 22:50 p.m. as she was carrying two bags containing 15 kg of ketamine and two kg of other drugs at a motel located on Km 80 of National Highway 9.
The suspect was later identified as Nguyen Yen Nhi, 19, residing in Hai Duong city of the northern province of Hai Duong.
Upon searching the motel, local authorities were able to seize 40 cakes of heroin and other exhibits.
Nhi confessed that she had transported the drugs from Laos through Quang Tri province and had then brought them to the northern province to be sold. Expanding the case, Quang tri border guards co-operated with their counterparts in Seponh district of Laos to arrest two more Vietnamese suspects.
A further investigation in the case is now underway.
