COVID-19: Four imported cases take Vietnam’s tally to 1,044

VOV.VN - Vietnam has confirmed four imported COVID-19 patients, including three Indian citizens during the past 12 hours, bringing the country’s tally of coronavirus infections to 1,044, the Ministry of Health said in its August 31 update.

Two of the Indian patients, aged 32 and 33 respectively, are oil and gas experts. They landed at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport on August 29 and tested positive for COVID-19.

Another Indian citizen, 62, is also an expert. He boarded 6E8679 flight from India to Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport on August 28. He was later diagnosed with the virus by Hanoi’s Central Hospital of Tropical Diseases.

The fourth patient, a female Vietnamese citizen, 29, returned to Vietnam on the same 6E8679 flight from India on August 28. Her positive status was also confirmed by the Central Hospital of Tropical Diseases.

All the four patients were placed in quarantine as soon as they landed in Vietnam, therefore posing no virus threats to the community, the Health Ministry said.

As of 18.00hrs August 31, Vietnam has registered a total of 1,044 coronavirus infections, of whom 690 have been infected locally, including 550 cases linked to the Da Nang outbreak.

The virus recurred in Da Nang city, a famous tourist destination in central Vietnam, on July 25 and it has since spread to nearly 20 cities and provinces across the country. The disease has now been brought under control.

The ministry announced August 31 that an additional 12 COVID-19 patients have fully recovered from the disease, taking the country’s recoveries to 707. However, it also reported two more coronavirus deaths the same day, raising the death toll to 34.

Most of the deaths were elderly people who suffered from serious diseases such as end-stage chronic kidney failure, end-stage blood cancer, coronary syndrome, acute respiratory failure, polyarthritis, hypertension, diabetes (Types 2), sepsis, pneumonia, and multi-organ failure.

The ministry said earlier in the day that six out of 11 severe cases are in critical condition and they are at a high risk of death. They were all locally transmitted and closely linked to the Da Nang outbreak.
