Cambodia hands over remains of six Vietnamese volunteer soldiers

VOV.VN - A memorial and handover ceremony was held in Kampong Thom province, Cambodia, on June 24 for the repatriation of the remains of six Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who sacrificed their lives in Cambodia during the war.

These remains were recently recovered during the 2024 - 2025 dry season.

Speaking at the ceremony, Major General Som Sun, commander of the Kampong Thom Sub-Military Region and vice chairman of the Committee for the Excavation and Repatriation of Vietnamese Volunteer Soldiers' Remains, stated that from the 2003 dry season to 2025, Kampong Thom province has cooperated in the recovery and repatriation of 1,178 sets of remains of Vietnamese soldiers who died in Cambodia. Currently, 60 to 70 more remains are still under investigation and verification.

Representing the people of Kampong Thom, Chea Van Chan, vice governor of the province, expressed his deep gratitude to the Vietnamese volunteer soldiers who bravely sacrificed their lives alongside the Cambodian people to overthrow the Khmer Rouge regime, bringing liberation to the country on January 7, 1979, and saving millions of Cambodian lives.

He affirmed continued cooperation with Team K72 of Vietnam’s Binh Phuoc Provincial Military Command in the ongoing search, excavation, and repatriation of the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts.

According to the Binh Phuoc Provincial Military Command, over 300 burial sites of Vietnamese martyrs have been identified across 21 locations in Cambodia’s Kratie and Kampong Thom provinces. Team K72 will continue to implement detailed action plans, strengthen efforts to collect information from local sources and eyewitnesses, and conduct focused surveys and excavations in their mission until all possible remains have been located and repatriated.
