African swine fever outbreaks prompt culling of over 100 pigs in Can Tho

VOV.VN - African swine fever (ASF) has occurred at several pig-raising households in Can Tho, in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, since the beginning of the year, with the veterinary sector, in coordination with local authorities, culling 113 infected and dead pigs.

The outbreaks were recorded at six households across four communes and wards. Of the total, local authorities culled 108 pigs weighing 5,127 kg, while farm owners buried five animals themselves. The outbreak in Tan Thanh commune has not yet passed 21 days.

According to the Can Tho Department of Agriculture and Environment, livestock production in the first quarter saw clear changes in production organisation, with a shift towards farm-based and closed-chain models, biosecurity and disease safety, and the adoption of VietGAHP standards.

The city has 1,110 livestock farms and around 90,000 farming households. A total of 45 facilities are certified under VietGAHP standards, while 38 facilities and commune-level zones are recognised as disease-safe.

As of March, total livestock and poultry numbers reached 17.54 million, up 5.17% year on year and exceeding the plan by 4.87%. The herd includes more than 4,100 buffaloes, nearly 62,200 cattle, over 505,600 pigs and more than 16.95 million poultry.

The department will continue to implement livestock development plans and animal disease prevention measures, intensify monitoring for early detection, and handle outbreaks in line with regulations. Efforts will also focus on animal quarantine, slaughter control, veterinary hygiene inspections and food safety.
