Vinh Long sees rising cases of African swine fever
VOV.VN - African swine fever (ASF) in southern Vinh Long province has been rising, requiring stronger response measures.
According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, since the beginning of the year ASF has been detected at 110 households across 58 hamlets/wards in 20 communes and wards. More than 1,800 pigs have been infected and culled, with over 114 tonnes disposed of. Twelve communes and wards remain within the 21-day outbreak window, including four that have officially declared outbreaks.
The rapid spread of ASF in Vinh Long stems mainly from farms failing to fully implement biosecure raising practices, limited vaccine coverage, pathogens persisting in the environment, and erratic weather conditions that help the disease continue to emerge and spread.
Some households and slaughtering facilities also remain complacent in disease-prevention efforts. In Nhuan Phu Tan Commune, authorities recently found pork suspected of being infected, without quarantine stamps and emitting foul odors.
Following administrative restructuring, Vinh Long’s total pig herd stands at more than 810,000, with the largest concentration in areas that formerly belonged to Ben Tre province.
To contain ASF, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment has proposed supplying vaccines and disinfectants to outbreak zones and buffer areas, along with synchronized measures such as immediately culling infected or positive-testing pigs and guiding farmers on barn cleaning and disinfection. Relevant agencies are stepping up oversight of slaughtering, trading and transporting pigs and pork into and out of the province.
