227kg bomb found near tourist site in war-torn Quang Tri province
VOV.VN - Authorities in central Vietnam’s Quang Tri province have safely removed a 227kg MK82 bomb discovered near the Cha Cung Stream tourist area in Truong Son commune.
Local residents reportedly found the unexploded bomb while working in a forested area near the tourist site on May 27 and immediately alerted authorities.
After securing the area, military officials confirmed the object was an MK82 aerial bomb weighing approximately 227 kilograms.
On May 28, a specialised disposal team from Quang Tri’s military command, working alongside the PeaceTrees Project, successfully recovered and relocated the bomb for safe handling under military procedures.
Quang Tri is one of the localities most heavily contaminated by unexploded ordnance (UXO) left over from past conflicts in Vietnam.
In a separate incident earlier this week, authorities in Da Nang also recovered two rusted mortar shells uncovered during dredging work at a local dam construction site.
According to initial assessments, the explosives were wartime remnants, including a 105mm mortar shell weighing around 40kg and an 81mm shell weighing about 4kg.
