10th grader wins gold at 2025 International Project Chemistry Olympiad
VOV.VN - A 10th grader of Vietnam has recently won a gold medal at the 2025 International Project Chemistry Olympiad (PCO), held at Moscow State University, Russia, according to the Vietnam Chemistry Association.
Tran Tuan Thanh, a 10th-grade chemistry major at the High School for Gifted Students, Hanoi University of Science, bagged the only gold medal for Vietnam.
Thanh was among eight Vietnamese students qualified for the final round. Seven other students were studying at High Schools for Gifted Students in Hanoi, Bac Giang, and Phu Yen.
PCO is an annual competition for students from grades 8 to 11, organized by the Department of Chemistry at Moscow State University since 2018. This year, the competition attracted around 2,500 participants from various countries.
The Olympiad consists of two main stages: qualifying (theoretical) and final (practical).
In the theoretical section, each participant of the Olympiad is invited to solve a number of theoretical problems related to inorganic, physical and organic chemistry. The participants who have coped with the tasks better than others are invited to participate in the final stage.
The final section consists of two steps. In the beginning each participant is invited to find the most optimal method for solving a specific practical problem. Following the results of the defense, the participants who showed the best results are invited to a practical step to bring their completed project to life.
This is the second time Vietnam has participated in PCO. Last year, the Vietnamese team won one gold medal and one bronze medal, earning the Best Team Award from the organizers.
