Vietnam ready for nationwide elections as preparations largely completed
VOV.VN - Vietnam has largely completed preparations for the upcoming nationwide elections for deputies to the 16th National Assembly and local People’s Councils for the 2026–2031 term, according to the National Election Council.
The nationwide electoral system has been fully established, ensuring that the Election Day (March 15) will be conducted in a democratic, lawful and safe manner.
The information was announced at a press conference held in Hanoi on March 12, where the National Election Council also launched the election press centre.
At the press briefing, Nguyen Thi Thanh, Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly, said the upcoming elections take place shortly after the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and during a year marking the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s first general election in 1946.
She described the elections as a particularly significant political event, reflecting the people’s right to directly choose representatives who will speak for their aspirations, interests and voices in the country’s highest state power body.
According to a report from the National Election Council, organisational preparations for the elections have been largely completed.
Across the country, authorities have established 34 provincial-level election committees and 3,320 commune-level election committees. In addition, 182 election boards for National Assembly deputies and 724 election boards for provincial People’s Councils have been set up.
More than 22,000 election boards for commune-level People’s Councils and over 72,000 polling stations have also been formed nationwide, ensuring compliance with legal requirements regarding structure and timelines.
Regarding candidate nominations, a total of 864 individuals are officially running for seats in the 16th National Assembly across 182 electoral constituencies, competing for 500 seats. This corresponds to an average ratio of 1.73 candidates for each elected deputy.
According to Ta Thi Yen, deputy head of the National Assembly’s Committee for Deputy Affairs and deputy chief of the Standing Office of the National Election Council, candidate preparation has been conducted through three rounds of consultation organised by the Vietnam Fatherland Front, along with feedback from voters at both residential communities and workplaces.
During the nomination process, authorities have sought to balance candidate standards with representation. While ensuring candidates meet requirements in terms of political integrity, ethics, competence and public credibility, attention has also been paid to representative diversity.
Women account for 45.37% of candidates, while people under the age of 40 make up 21.64%. Ethnic minority candidates represent 21.76%, non-Party members account for 7.41%, and candidates seeking re-election make up 27.31%.
Also at the press briefing, authorities also highlighted measures to safeguard information security and address misinformation during the election period.
According to Nguyen Quoc Hung, vice chairman of the National Assembly’s Committee for National Defence, Security and External Affairs, relevant forces will strengthen monitoring of cyberspace to detect and address false or misleading information related to the elections.
At the same time, official information will be proactively released in a transparent and timely manner to help guide public opinion and prevent misinformation from spreading.
Any attempts to misuse social media platforms to disseminate false information that could disrupt or undermine the elections will be handled strictly in accordance with the law, authorities said.
With coordinated and thorough preparations from central to local levels, the National Election Council expressed confidence that the elections for the 16th National Assembly and local People’s Councils for the 2026–2031 term would take place democratically, lawfully and safely.
