Vietnam Party chief To Lam elected State President for 2026–2031 term
VOV.VN - The National Assembly of Vietnam on April 7 elected To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, as State President for the 2026–2031 term, with unanimous approval at a plenary session in Hanoi.
The vote saw all 495 deputies present giving their support, signaling full parliamentary consensus, according to a resolution adopted at the plenary session.
National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man invited the newly-elected president to take the oath of office.
Standing before the national flag, Party leader and president To Lam pledged loyalty to the country, the people, and the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, committing to fulfill all responsibilities entrusted by the Party, the State, and the citizens.
Immediately following the oath, the new leader expressed gratitude to voters and citizens nationwide, emphasising his commitment to responsible leadership, national development, and unwavering trust in the Party.
He pledged to work with the Party, the people, and the armed forces to achieve Vietnam’s 100-year strategic goal by 2045 to become a high-income, developed, independent, democratic, prosperous, civilized, and happy nation, while contributing positively to regional and global peace and stability.
He highlighted his responsibilities to maintain national security and stability, promote sustainable and rapid economic growth, and ensure that people fully benefit from development.
The top leader committed to strengthening a socialist rule-of-law state, a self-reliant economy, comprehensive and modern national defence and security, and a capable armed force able to protect the nation in all circumstances.
Strategic priorities also include fostering a new growth model driven by science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation; enhancing education and human resources; modernising social governance; and advancing international cooperation and integration, contributing to global peace and development.
The leader emphasised that the ultimate goal is to ensure that the people enjoy the benefits of development, reinforcing the central role and strength of citizens in policy-making, and promoting national unity toward long-term national aspirations.
He concluded that, with Vietnam’s millennia-old heritage, an enduring spirit of progress, and international support, the country is poised to write a new chapter of sustainable growth and global integration.
The 16th National Assembly is convening its first session in Hanoi, and high on the agenda will be electing key leadership posts of the state apparatus according to constitutional procedures.
On April 7, lawmakers are to elect the State President and the Prime Minister for the 2026–2031 term. A day earlier, Tran Thanh Man was re-elected Chairman of the National Assembly for the new term.
