Government presents overhaul plan at NA Standing Committee meeting

VOV.VN - The Government, after being restructured, will consist of 14 ministries and 3 ministerial-level agencies, compared to the current structure of 18 ministries and 4 ministerial-level agencies, according to Minister of Home Affairs Pham Thi Thanh Tra.

The restructuring aims to improve efficiency, streamline operations, avoid overlapping functions, and meet the country’s new development requirements, said the minister at a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee in Hanoi on February 5, while presenting a proposal on government overhaul.

Among the 14 ministries, Tra said, six new ministries will be formed through mergers of a number of existing ministries, including:

  • the Ministry of Planning and Investment with the Ministry of Finance into the Ministry of Finance
  • the Ministry of Construction and the Ministry of Transport into the Ministry of Construction
  • the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment into the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment
  • the Ministry of Science and Technology with the Ministry of Information and Communications into the Ministry of Science and Technology
  • the Ministry of Home Affairs with the Ministry of Labour, Invalids, and Social Affairs into the Ministry of Home Affairs
  • the Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs with the religious affairs agency of the Ministry of Home Affairs into the Ministry of Ethnicity and Religion

The government will maintain the eight existing ministries, namely the Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Education and Training, alongside three ministerial level agencies – the Government Office, Government Inspectorate, and State Bank of Vietnam.

The National Assembly Standing Committee is expected to give opinions on the proposal during its 42nd meeting which is getting underway in Hanoi from February 5 – 7.
