Ceremony honours legacy of late Party leader Nguyen Van Linh
VOV.VN - A ceremony was solemnly held in northern Hung Yen province on July 1 to mark the 110th birth anniversary of Party General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh, a staunch communist, a talented leader, and the visionary who initiated and led the Đổi Mới (Renovation) process in Vietnam.

Born Nguyen Van Cuc, also known by his revolutionary alias Muoi Cuc on July 1, 1915, Nguyen Van Linh was a distinguished resident of Giai Pham commune, Hung Yen province, and a dedicated revolutionary who served the nation for nearly 70 years. His career spanned from the 1930s revolutionary movements in the North, through the long years of struggle in the South, until his appointment as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1986.
Speaking at the event, Party General Secretary To Lam emphasised the late leader’s profound contributions to the nation, particularly his bold reform mindset, pioneering economic renovation, and strong anti-corruption stance.
His leadership helped shift Vietnam from a centrally planned to a market-oriented economy, boosted international integration, and laid the foundation for today’s development stressed Lam.
One of his most impactful legacies, according to the Party chief, was the 1987 series “Things That Must Be Done Immediately” published on Nhân Dân (People) newspaper under the pen name NVL. These writings fearlessly exposed corruption, bureaucratic inefficiency, and wastefulness, thereby reinforcing public trust in the Party through transparent and decisive governance.
Thanks to these initiatives, Vietnam transitioned from collective agriculture to household contracts, from a subsidy-based economy to a market economy, from isolation to integration, and from command-based management to supply-demand dynamics. These reforms helped the country overcome economic crises, significantly improved living standards, and elevated Vietnam’s global standing.
He highlighted three enduring lessons from the late leader’s legacy that are daring to think and act innovatively, strengthening internal capacity instead of copying external models, and promoting Party integrity through ethical governance, serving as a guilding light for today’s leadership.

That mindset remains critical as Vietnam addresses challenges like outdated growth models, environmental issues, population aging, and global geopolitical competition, he noted.
Marking a new chapter with the implementation of the two-tier local government model nationwide, starting July 1, the Party General Secretary urged the political system to rekindle the late leader’s spirit of innovation, determination, scientific thinking, and closeness to the people. He called for continued commitment to the socialist-oriented market economy while adapting to emerging trends such as green finance, digital economy, and circular economy to firmly integrate Vietnam into global political and economic systems and elevate its status among world powers.
Earlier in the morning, Party General Secretary To Lam and other Party and State leaders paid tribute to the late leader at his memorial house in Nguyen Van Linh commune and at his statue in Pho Hien ward.
