Vietnam’s top leader To Lam begins State visit to India
VOV.VN - General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President To Lam left Hanoi on May 5 for a State visit to India from May 5 to 7 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The visit is expected to further strengthen the long-standing relationship between Vietnam and India, elevating their ties to a new level in line with their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
This marks the leader’s first visit to India in his current role and coincides with the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam–India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Vietnam and India share a long history of traditional friendship, built and nurtured by generations of leaders and people in both countries. The relationship is characterised by strong political trust, converging strategic interests, and deep cultural and historical connections.
India is one of Vietnam’s leading Comprehensive Strategic Partners in the region, while Vietnam is regarded as an important partner in India’s Act East policy and its broader Indo-Pacific strategy, contributing to regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
According to Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cuong, the visit provides an opportunity for leaders of the two countries to discuss major orientations and explore breakthrough measures to further advance bilateral ties.
Key areas of cooperation expected to be promoted include trade, investment, tourism, people-to-people exchanges, and science and technology.
In recent years, Vietnam–India relations have recorded strong progress across multiple sectors. Bilateral trade reached US$16.46 billion in 2025, up 10.5% year on year. In the first quarter of 2026, trade turnover stood at US$4.8 billion, marking a 28% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
Vietnam’s exports to India totaled US$2.9 billion, up 25%, while imports from India hit US$1.8 billion, up 34%.
As of March 2026, Indian investors had 503 valid projects in Vietnam with total registered capital exceeding US$1.1 billion, ranking 26th among 154 countries and territories investing in Vietnam. Investments mainly flow into manufacturing and processing.
In addition to economic cooperation, defence and security collaboration remains a key strategic pillar, while cooperation in education, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges continues to expand.
With a solid foundation of political trust and shared strategic vision, the State visit by Party General Secretary and President To Lam is expected to usher in a new phase of development in Vietnam–India relations.
