Vietnam and India step up cooperation in textiles and footwear
VOV.VN - The Vietnam Trade Office in India hosted an online seminar on April 22 aimed at strengthening connectivity and promoting cooperation and innovation in the textile and footwear industries between the two countries.
The event attracted nearly 60 enterprises, associations, and research institutions, reflecting growing interest from business communities in both countries in these sectors.
Speaking at the seminar, Trade Counsellor and Head of the Vietnam Trade Office in India, Bui Trung Thuong, highlighted that Vietnam and India are dynamic economies with strong complementarities in the textile and footwear value chains. While India has advantages in raw materials, technology, and market scale, Vietnam stands out in manufacturing capacity, export performance, and an extensive network of free trade agreements.
These strengths provide a solid foundation for expanding bilateral cooperation in investment, trade, and technology transfer in the coming years, Thuong said.
A key highlight of the seminar was the introduction of Bharat Tex 2026, a major international textile exhibition scheduled for July 2026 in New Delhi. As one of the world’s largest textile events, it will showcase the entire value chain, from fibers, fabrics, and accessories to manufacturing, fashion, and retail, aiming to promote global trade and investment cooperation. The fair is expected to gather more than 3,500 companies and exhibitors, over 7,000 international buyers, and approximately 130,000 trade visitors.
Indian organisers expressed their expectation for Vietnam to participate in Bharat Tex 2026, thereby expanding market access, seeking partners, and enhancing bilateral collaboration.
In the silk sector, representatives of the Central Silk Board of India noted significant cooperation potential, with Vietnam serving as an important supplier of raw silk and India possessing strengths in processing and consumption. Both sides could enhance collaboration in breeding research, training, and product development to increase value across the supply chain.
From an investment perspective, representatives of Invest India emphasised various cooperation opportunities in textiles and footwear, ranging from supply chain development to technology transfer. India is ready to support Vietnamese enterprises in implementing projects and leveraging advantages in raw materials, market access, and industrial ecosystems.
Vietnamese industry representatives also introduced a range of specialised exhibitions and invited Indian businesses to participate, further expanding cooperation in footwear and supporting industries.
The seminar featured substantive discussions on market trends, green technologies, and investment opportunities. Amid the ongoing restructuring of global supply chains toward diversification and sustainability, the event reaffirmed the bridging role of the Vietnam Trade Office in India in promoting deeper and more effective bilateral economic cooperation.
