Vietnamese community plays key role in Vietnam–Thailand ties: Top leader To Lam
VOV.VN - Party General Secretary and State President To Lam described the Vietnamese community in Thailand as a key bridge in strengthening bilateral relations, during his meeting with nearly 600 overseas Vietnamese in Bangkok on May 27 as part of his official visit to the country.
The Vietnamese leader praised overseas Vietnamese in Thailand for their continued efforts to preserve their cultural identity, promote the Vietnamese language and contribute positively to local society, while also helping deepen friendship and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
He stressed that the relationship between Vietnam and Thailand is entering a new phase of deeper and more comprehensive cooperation following the upgrade of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2025.
The two countries are expanding cooperation beyond traditional areas into new sectors such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence, education, tourism and cultural exchange, while also strengthening locality-to-locality connectivity and people-to-people exchanges, he said.
In that context, the overseas Vietnamese community plays an increasingly important role in promoting mutual understanding and enhancing long-term bilateral cooperation, the Vietnamese leader noted.
He also highlighted the historical and spiritual significance of President Ho Chi Minh’s legacy in Thailand, particularly in Udon Thani and several northeastern provinces where the late leader once carried out revolutionary activities.
According to him, sites linked to President Ho Chi Minh in Thailand not only reflect the strong attachment of overseas Vietnamese to their homeland, but also stand as symbols of the longstanding friendship between the peoples of Vietnam and Thailand.
Briefing the community on Vietnam’s recent development, Party General Secretary and State President To Lam said the country continues maintaining macroeconomic stability, promoting science and technology, accelerating digital transformation and expanding international integration.
He added that Vietnam would continue discussing with Thai authorities measures to create favourable conditions for overseas Vietnamese to stabilise their lives, integrate more deeply into local society and further contribute to bilateral friendship and cooperation.
On the occasion, the top leader presented the Vietnamese community in Thailand with a portrait of President Ho Chi Minh and a collection of more than 200 books on Vietnamese language, culture and history to support the preservation of Vietnamese identity among younger generations.
The Vietnamese community in Thailand currently numbers more than 100,000 people. Many have established stable lives and gained respected positions in fields such as business, healthcare and education.
The meeting took place during the leader’s official visit to Thailand from May 27–29, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and ongoing efforts to deepen the Vietnam–Thailand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
