Top leader To Lam begins Thailand visit to foster Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
VOV.VN - Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and his spouse departed Hanoi on May 27 for an official visit to Thailand at the invitation of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and his spouse.
Accompanying Party General Secretary and State President To Lam are senior leaders of the Party and State, leaders of ministries in charge of defence, public security, foreign affairs, along with representatives from several agencies and localities.
The visit, taking place from May 27 to 29, is regarded as an important milestone in Vietnam–Thailand relations as the two countries move toward deeper cooperation following the upgrade of ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
This is also the first official visit to Thailand by Vietnam’s top leader since the country’s new leadership structure was consolidated and following the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
Thailand is the first ASEAN country selected by Party General Secretary and State President To Lam for an official visit, highlighting the strategic importance of bilateral relations in Vietnam’s foreign policy.
The trip also coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, adding further significance as Vietnam–Thailand cooperation enters a new phase of development.
The visit is expected not only to strengthen high-level political ties but also to create momentum for practical cooperation in areas such as economic development, digital transformation, infrastructure connectivity, tourism, and sustainable growth.
Following the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in May 2025, both countries are seeking to build a broader and more deeply connected framework of cooperation with stronger regional integration.
According to Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cuong, leaders of the two countries would discuss strategic orientations for bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues of shared concern.
The talks are also expected to further strengthen political trust and expand cooperation in emerging sectors, including digital transformation, tourism connectivity, trade, and supply chain cooperation.
Economic relations between Vietnam and Thailand have continued to maintain strong growth momentum in recent years. Thailand is currently Vietnam’s largest trading partner within ASEAN. Bilateral trade exceeded US$22 billion in 2025 and continued to grow during the first months of 2026.
Thailand is also the second-largest ASEAN investor in Vietnam, with hundreds of active projects focused on manufacturing, retail, energy, and infrastructure.
The two countries are also advancing the “Three Connections” strategy aimed at strengthening supply chain integration, business connectivity, and sustainable development cooperation.
The strategy is seen as an important foundation for enhancing the role of both Vietnam and Thailand within regional economic networks, particularly as ASEAN accelerates integration and supply chain restructuring.
Beyond economic cooperation, the two countries have also recorded positive results in defence, security, education, labour, culture, and tourism cooperation.
In 2024, nearly one million Vietnamese tourists visited Thailand, while the Vietnamese community of more than 100,000 people living in Thailand continues to serve as an important bridge in bilateral friendship relations.
Party General Secretary and State President To Lam’s official visit to Thailand is expected to create new momentum for Vietnam–Thailand relations while contributing to peace, stability, and development cooperation within ASEAN.
