Vietnam welcomes Timor-Leste as the 11th official member of ASEAN
VOV.VN - Vietnam welcomes Timor-Leste as the 11th official member of ASEAN and believes that the country will make a positive contribution to the development of the ASEAN Community, focusing on solidarity, resilience, and placing people at the centre.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Pham Thu Hang was speaking at a regular press briefing in Hanoi on October 16, expressed Vietnam’s appreciation for ASEAN’s decision to admit Timor-Leste as a full member.
Vietnam believes Timor-Leste will make a positive contribution to strengthening the ASEAN Community, which aims to be resilient, innovative, and responsible, she said.
ASEAN leaders officially agreed to admit Timor-Leste as the bloc’s 11th member at the 46th ASEAN Summit held in May. The official membership ceremony is expected to take place during the 47th ASEAN Summit slated for October 26 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the ASEAN Chair for 2025, also confirmed on October 11 that Timor-Leste would officially become ASEAN’s 11th full member later this month.
Regarding the information that US President Donald Trump will attend the 47th ASEAN Summit and witness the signing of a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, spokesperson Pham Thu Hang welcomed the mediation efforts of the countries involved, particularly Malaysia in its role as ASEAN Chair for 2025.
She also commended the positive cooperation between Thailand and Cambodia in promoting the peaceful resolution of their differences based on international law, the United Nations Charter, the ASEAN Charter, and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC).
Vietnam fully supports the spirit of ASEAN unity and cooperation for the common benefit of its member states, as well as for peace and stability in the region and the world, she emphasised.
