PM pledges to share Vietnam’s development experience with Timor Leste
VOV.VN - Vietnam is always ready to share its socio-economic development experience with Timor Leste, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh told his Timor-Leste counterpart Xanana Gusmao on the sidelines of the 46th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on May 27.

Chinh warmly congratulated Timor-Leste on being unanimously accepted by the ASEAN leaders for admission as the newest member of the bloc at the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit in October 2025.
He proposed that Vietnam and Timor Leste continue maintaining exchanges and contact at all levels, especially at the high level, and proactively engage in discussions and cooperation to reach agreements in areas of mutual interest such as economy, trade, investment, agriculture, rice exports, e-government, and digital transformation.
He also called on the Government of Timor-Leste to facilitate Vietnamese enterprises, including those in telecommunications and oil and gas, in conducting business and investment in Timor-Leste.
For his part, Gusmao expressed heartfelt appreciation for the warm sentiments that Vietnam has extended to the people and country of Timor-Leste, as well as for Vietnam’s strong and effective support in Timor-Leste’s path toward ASEAN membership.
He affirmed that Timor-Leste places great importance on and wishes to strengthen comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam – a country that has recorded remarkable socio-economic development achievements in recent years.
Agreeing with Chinh’s proposals, Gusmao affirmed his desire to deepen the bilateral relationship in a more practical and substantive manner, especially in telecommunications, aviation, and education. He also stressed the importance of close, effective coordination between the two countries at regional and international multilateral forums, including within ASEAN.
The two leaders agreed to deepen bilateral relations in the time ahead, building on the outcomes of President Jose Ramos-Horta’s visit to Vietnam from July 31 to August 3, 2024. They committed to continuing the promotion of high-level and all-level visits, effectively implementing signed agreements, and tapping into the economic cooperation potential, particularly in trade and investment, while creating favourable conditions for businesses of both countries to operate in each other’s markets.
The two sides also agreed to boost cooperation in culture, tourism, and education, thereby contributing positively to people-to-people exchanges and fostering multi-faceted friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
