Vietnam, US pledge cooperation to realise climate commitments

VOV.VN - Vietnamese Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha on November 7 had a meeting with US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry to discuss joint cooperation in fulfilling climate commitments as well as the energy transition of Vietnam.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) which is getting underway in the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh from November 6-18.

At the meeting, Ha reaffirmed Vietnam’s COP26 commitment to reduce net emissions to zero by 2050, and said the country has implemented comprehensive measures in the field of energy transition towards the goal.

However, he also noted that ensuring energy security for economic development and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a difficult and complicated problem that requires international support in terms of both resources and technology.

The Minister suggested that the US and the Group of 7 (G7) implement the commitments made on just and equitable energy transition. He emphasized that Vietnam has made clear commitments, and it expects partners should also have clear commitments to realise the goal.

For his part, Kerry said that the US - a member of the G7 - has made commitments on energy transition, and that the G7 would continue to review the commitments within the group. He affirmed that the US would support Vietnam in implementing the just and equitable energy transition process and responding to climate change, as well as actively promoting cooperation in the field with Vietnam.

Both sides discussed solutions to achieve the goal of combating climate change and controlling the global temperature increase below 1.5 degrees Celsius under the Paris Agreement.
