Vietnam urges China to respect sovereignty over Paracel Islands

VOV.VN - Vietnam has called on China to respect its sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands and comply with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), following China’s unilateral fishing ban in parts of the East Sea.

Vietnam’s position on China’s fishing ban remains consistent and has been reiterated on multiple occasions, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said in response to reporters’ question on May 5.

Earlier, China announced a fishing ban from May 1 to August 16, covering certain areas of the East Sea.

Hang emphasised that Vietnam requests China to respect Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Paracel Islands in accordance with international law, as well as its sovereign rights and jurisdiction over maritime zones established under UNCLOS.

Vietnam also calls on relevant parties to respect the lawful rights of Vietnamese fishermen operating in waters under its sovereignty and jurisdiction, as well as in areas beyond national jurisdiction in line with international law.

The spokesperson further urged all sides to refrain from actions that could complicate the situation, contributing to the maintenance of peace, stability and a rules-based order in the East Sea.
