Vietnam reaffirms sovereignty over Spratlys after China-Philippine vessel clash

VOV.VN - Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Pham Thu Hang on October 16 reaffirmed Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Spratly Islands, including Thitu Island, following the collision between Chinese and Philippine government vessels near the area.

In response to questions from reporters, Hang emphasised that Vietnam possesses full historical and legal grounds to assert its sovereignty over the Spratly Islands, including Thitu Island.

Vietnam is deeply concerned about the information released by the parties involved regarding the incident, and we call on all sides to respect Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Spratly Islands, stated the spokesperson.

She called on relevant parties to restrain and adhere to international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982).

Hang further urged them to take measures to ensure maritime security and safety, in compliance with the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) collision prevention rules.

Vietnam hopes that the concerned parties will create favourable conditions for the negotiation of a substantive and effective Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC), to ensure lasting peace, stability, and security in the region, she noted.
