Vietnam and Hungary to expand cooperation into new areas

VOV.VN - Vietnamese President Luong Cuong and his visiting Hungarian counterpart Tamas Sulyok held talks in Hanoi on May 28, including measure to increase effective cooperation in traditional areas and expand cooperation into new areas.

Cuong welcomed Sulyok, his spouse, and the high-level Hungarian State delegation on their official visit to Vietnam, emphasising that Sulyok’s visit coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries (1950 - 2025).

He thanked Hungary for providing valuable support during Vietnam’s national liberation struggle and its ongoing development process. He reminded that Hungary was one of the first ten countries to recognise and establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam in 1950, at a challenging time in Vietnam’s fight for independence.

Cuong also congratulated Hungary on its achievements in socio-economic development and European integration, which have enhanced Hungary’s position both regionally and globally.

Vietnam always values and seeks to strengthen cooperation with Hungary, considering it a top priority partner and the first comprehensive partner of Vietnam in Central and Eastern Europe, he said.

Sulyok, for his part, commended Vietnam’s development achievements in recent times, and affirmed that Hungary considers Vietnam its most important partner in Southeast Asia and desires to promote cooperation across all fields.

The two presidents expressed satisfaction with the positive developments in Vietnam - Hungary relations across various fields, especially since the two countries upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership in 2018.

Both sides have exchanged numerous delegations, particularly at the high level. Economic cooperation continues to be a highlight, with bilateral trade reaching nearly US$1 billion in 2024. Cooperation in other areas such as education, environment, culture, tourism, defence–security, and people-to-people exchanges has also yielded positive results.

To further promote bilateral relations, the two leaders agreed to continue enhancing contacts and exchanges at all levels, especially high-level, across all channels to strengthen political trust and mutual understanding, forming a foundation to boost cooperation in all areas.

Acknowledging trade and investment as a crucial pillar in bilateral relations, they agreed to further enhance the role of the Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation, encourage ministries, sectors, localities, and enterprises of both countries to effectively implement the EU - Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), and ramp up investment cooperation in Hungary’s strengths such as information technology, energy, agriculture, food processing, health care, and pharmaceuticals.

This cooperation aims to serve as a bridge into the ASEAN market with a population of over 650 million and a GDP exceeding US$4,000 billion and the EU market, including Central and Eastern Europe, they said.

On education and training, both sides recognised this as a traditional cooperation area. Cuong thanked Hungary for assisting Vietnam in training thousands of officials, many of whom currently hold important positions in the state apparatus and national economy. They consented to effectively utilise the 200 scholarships Hungary grants annually to Vietnamese students, prioritising training in areas where Vietnam currently has high demand, including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, information and communication technology, environment, and agriculture.

The two leaders agreed to strengthen effective cooperation in traditional areas such as defence–security, science - technology, agriculture, healthcare - pharmaceuticals, culture, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges, while also promoting expanded cooperation in new areas such as digital transformation, information technology, environment, and water resource management.

Cuong thanked Hungary for appreciating the Vietnamese community in their host country and requested Hungarian authorities to continue facilitating the community’s stable life, deeper integration into local society, and positive contributions to Hungary’s development as well as the traditional friendship between the two countries.

Both sides vowed to continue close coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums, especially at the United Nations, contributing to addressing global challenges.

Exchanging views on regional and international issues of mutual concern, Sulyok said, the two countries share many similarities in foreign policy and national history, as they both cherish peace and justice.

The two leaders agreed that disputes and conflicts worldwide should be resolved by peaceful means, based on the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), contributing to maintaining peace, stability, security, and freedom of navigation and overflight in regions and globally, for cooperation and common prosperity.

On this occasion, Sulyok respectfully invited Cuong to visit Hungary, and the invitation was accepted with pleasure.
