Vietnam and China agree to boost strategic transport connectivity

VOV.VN - Vietnam and China have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, with a strong emphasis on advancing strategic transport connectivity, particularly in cross-border railway development between the two countries.

The agreement was reached during talks in Beijing on September 4 between President Luong Cuong of Vietnam and General Secretary and President Xi Jinping of China.

President Cuong, who is paying a working trip to China, proposed that both sides accelerate the development of strategic transportation links, with a priority on railway cooperation. He underscored the need to elevate high-quality investment in infrastructure and major transport projects, while facilitating the movement of goods and people, serving economic development in border areas and across the region.

President Xi expressed strong support for Vietnam’s proposals. He highlighted the need to convene the first session of the Joint Committee on Railway Cooperation at the earliest opportunity, to operationalise infrastructure connectivity initiatives and enhance cross-regional cooperation. He also suggested expanding cooperation in emerging fields such as digital technology, innovation, and clean energy.

Beyond transport, both sides reached high consensus on enhancing high-level and multi-level exchanges, particularly in diplomacy, defence, and security; promoting cooperation in science and technology, innovation, and high-quality human resource training; and strengthening people-to-people exchanges, especially among the younger generations, to foster mutual understanding and friendship.

The two leaders also congratulated each other on recent diplomatic achievements and national development successes, reaffirming mutual political trust and their commitment to promoting practical cooperation.

President Xi reiterated China's support for Vietnam’s path toward socialism suited to its national conditions, and expressed confidence in the success of Vietnam’s upcoming 14th National Party Congress.

On regional and global affairs, both sides agreed to maintain close coordination at multilateral forums so as to jointly promote peace, cooperation, and development in the region and beyond. They vowed to effectively manage and address maritime differences through peaceful means, with mutual respect for legitimate interests in line with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Both sides also pledged to further utilize existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms, such as the Bilateral Cooperation Steering Committee and the 3+3 Strategic Dialogue Mechanism.

President Cuong arrived in Beijing on September 2 for a three-day working trip where he also attended the grand ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War.

His trip comes hot on the heels of a working visit to Vietnam by Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, where he also attended a grand ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s August Revolution and National Day.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh of Vietnam also attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit 2025 in late August 2025.
