Top legislator Tran Thanh Man meets Singapore president Tharman Shanmugaratnam
VOV.VN - Tran Thanh Man, chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam, met with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam of Singapore on December 3 as part of his ongoing visit to Singapore.
Tharman welcomed Man’s visit which is said is of great significance as both countries are about to celebrate their major anniversaries in 2025. He expressed hope that the visit would enhance the practical and sustainable development of the bilateral relationship.
The President also congratulated the National Assembly of Vietnam on its close cooperation with the Government in making sound decisions, thereby gaining significant achievements in socio-economic development, including high GDP growth rates.
On this occasion, he cordially extended an invitation to Party General Secretary To Lam of Vietnam to visit Singapore at an appropriate time.
Man for his part congratulated Singapore on maintaining positive growth and implementing effective policies to support its people, especially those with low incomes. He expressed his belief that Singapore would successfully build a dynamic and inclusive, fair and competitive, resilient and united society.
Man shared the outcomes of the talks between the two parliamentary leaders, focusing on key directions and measures to boost cooperation between the two countries and their legislative bodies, spanning various fields such as politics, diplomacy, national security, economics, trade, education, culture, and local connections.
He requested that Tharman support effective implementation of the 2022 Cooperation Agreement between the two parliaments, aiming to make legislative cooperation a key channel within the Vietnam-Singapore Strategic Partnership, setting the stage for future upgrades of bilateral relations.
Discussing areas of mutual interest, Man suggested that Singapore enhance the implementation of training programmes for officials and increase scholarships for Vietnam.
In response, Tharman affirmed Singapore’s continued support in improving Vietnam’s human resources quality and proposed further cooperation in areas such as digital transformation, carbon credit markets, energy collaboration, and the integration of electrical networks, including the ASEAN electricity grid.
The two leaders also discussed the acceleration of Singapore’s Sembcorp Group project with PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC), as well as the promotion of cultural and tourism exchanges.
Both leaders committed to creating favourable conditions for the Vietnam-Singapore Friendship Association and enhancing the contributions of citizens from both countries to each other's socio-economic development, acting as bridges for bilateral relations.
On regional and international multilateral cooperation, the two sides agreed to continue close coordination at forums such as the United Nations, ASEAN, APEC, and parliamentary forums. They reaffirmed ASEAN’s consistent position on resolving disputes in the East Sea through peaceful means in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to ensure a stable and sustainable development environment in the region.
