Top leader To Lam highlights new opportunities in Vietnam–Liechtenstein ties
VOV.VN - General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam highlighted new opportunities to foster Vietnam-Liechtenstein relations during his meeting with visiting Liechtenstein Prime Minister Brigitte Haas, in Hanoi on October 18.
He welcomed Prime Minister Haas’s visit and described it, alongside the signing of the Vietnam–Liechtenstein Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement and the Vietnam–European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Free Trade Agreement, as an important milestone laying the groundwork for broader bilateral cooperation.
He spoke highly of Liechtenstein’s development achievements, including its high per capita income, strong economic growth and strengths in high-tech manufacturing, financial services, banking and innovation. He also commended the principality’s active role in promoting multilateralism, free trade and international efforts to address global challenges.
Briefing his guest on Vietnam’s development priorities, Party General Secretary and State President To Lam said the country is pursuing its two centenary goals, with the ambition of becoming a developed, high-income economy by 2045. Science and technology, innovation, digital transformation and the development of the private sector have been identified as key drivers of the country’s next stage of growth.
Vietnam also regards self-reliance, resilience and stronger international partnerships as important foundations for rapid and sustainable development.
Prime Minister Haas, for her part, praised Vietnam’s development achievements, hospitable people and growing regional standing, and expressed her admiration for Vietnam’s rapid economic development and expanding industrial base.
The Liechtenstein leader emphasised that closer political ties could provide fresh impetus for economic cooperation, encouraging businesses from both countries to explore opportunities for trade and investment. She also showed interest in learning from Vietnam’s development experience.
Liechtenstein considers Vietnam an important partner in Southeast Asia, and it desires to foster long-term cooperation in trade, investment and other areas of shared interest, she told her host.
The two agreements signed during the visit, she noted, would provide a foundation for further developing bilateral relations.
Expanding cooperation in areas of shared interest
Both leaders agreed on the importance of maintaining high-level exchanges and contacts at various levels, as well as broadening cooperation through different channels to strengthen political trust.
They also underscored the need to identify and build on each country’s respective strengths and complementarities, with potential areas of cooperation including finance, science and technology, precision manufacturing and high-quality workforce training.
Prime Minister Haas expressed Liechtenstein’s readiness to share its experience and models for optimising production capacity and productive resources to improve economic efficiency and productivity.
Party General Secretary and State President To Lam proposed that the two sides coordinate closely to complete the necessary procedures for the Vietnam–EFTA Free Trade Agreement to enter into force at an early date. He also called for stronger business links and improved market access for goods from both countries.
Vietnam will welcome greater investment by Liechtenstein businesses in areas such as green finance, high technology, precision engineering, automation and medical equipment, he said.
The two sides also agreed on the importance of promoting cultural and artistic exchanges and introducing their respective countries and peoples to wider audiences, thereby deepening mutual understanding.
On regional and international issues, the leaders pledged to strengthen cooperation within the United Nations and contribute to peace and stability in the region and beyond.
On the occasion, leader To Lam asked Prime Minister Haas to convey an invitation to Prince Hans-Adam II to visit Vietnam at a mutually convenient time.
Liechtenstein Prime Minister Brigitte Haas arrived in Hanoi on October 17 for a three-day official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung.
