PM meets Russian Federation Council leader, boosts parliamentary cooperation

VOV.VN - Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Chairwoman of the Federation Council of Russia Valentina Matviyenko in Moscow on March 23, as part of his official visit to the country, reaffirming both sides’ commitment to strengthening parliamentary cooperation and deepening bilateral ties.

Welcoming the Vietnamese leader, Chairwoman Matviyenko praised Prime Minister Chinh’s contributions to bilateral relations and expected that his visit would create new momentum to further consolidate the traditional friendship and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

She also congratulated Vietnam on the successful organisation of the election of deputies to the 16th National Assembly and local People’s Council, expressing hope for closer cooperation between the two legislatures.

Prime Minister Chinh conveyed greetings from Vietnam’s senior leaders and reaffirmed that Vietnam consistently attaches great importance to its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Russia, considering it a top priority in its foreign policy.

Both sides agreed to further promote the role of their respective parliaments in overseeing the implementation of agreements reached between the two governments across key areas, including economic and trade cooperation, energy and oil and gas, high technology, security and defence, human resource development, and infrastructure. They also emphasised the need to address legal bottlenecks to enhance the effectiveness of bilateral cooperation in the new context.

Chairwoman Matviyenko voiced strong support for Vietnam’s proposals and pledged to facilitate the effective implementation of bilateral commitments. She highlighted the importance of advancing cooperation in energy and oil and gas, while also stressing the need to strengthen people-to-people exchanges, education and training, tourism, and cultural cooperation to deepen mutual understanding.

The two sides underscored the importance of expanding cooperation between localities and promoting sister-city partnerships. Noting that Vietnam is a popular destination among Russian tourists, Matviyenko expressed her hope that more Vietnamese visitors would travel to Russia, including to destinations beyond major cities.

Chinh, meanwhile, called on the Federation Council to continue supporting the Vietnamese community in Russia, enabling them to integrate well into local society and contribute positively to the host country’s socio-economic development and bilateral relations.

Both sides also discussed enhancing coordination at multilateral parliamentary forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership, contributing to peace, cooperation, and sustainable development.

The Vietnamese Prime Minister called on the Russian side to maintain an objective and balanced stance and support Vietnam’s and ASEAN’s positions on the East Sea issue, in line with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

On this occasion, also extended an invitation from the Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman for her to visit Vietnam, which she gladly accepted.
