Government chief pushes LNG cooperation with Russia’s Novatek
VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held a working session with Novatek, a leading Russian and global natural gas company, in Moscow on March 23 (local time) during his official visit to the Russian Federation, to accelerate major liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in Vietnam.
Leonid Viktorovich Mikhelson, Chairman of Novatek, welcomed the Prime Minister and the Vietnamese delegation, describing Vietnam as one of the fastest-growing economies in the world with a strong focus on energy development. He said Novatek hopes to continue receiving support to expand cooperation and investment in Vietnam on the basis of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and longstanding ties between the two countries.
Founded in August 1994, Novatek operates in the exploration, production, processing and trading of natural gas and liquid hydrocarbons. It is Russia’s second-largest natural gas producer after Gazprom and ranks seventh globally among publicly listed companies in terms of gas output. In the Forbes Global 2000 list in 2020, Novatek ranked 316th among the world’s largest public companies.
The group has implemented large-scale LNG projects and developed proprietary gas liquefaction technologies. It has shown strong interest in Vietnam’s LNG sector, including potential involvement in the Ca Na project with partners such as Zarubezhneft, and exploring opportunities in Vietnam’s growing gas market.
Congratulating Novatek on its achievements, PM Chinh said the group’s activities are in line with Vietnam’s major development orientations, including a target of economic growth of 10% or higher, achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, and carrying out key transitions, particularly in energy. He noted that such growth targets, along with the development of sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI), require substantial energy resources.
The Government leader welcomed Novatek’s proactive exchanges with Vietnamese partners and expressed confidence that shared development orientations would create mutually reinforcing effects.
He called on the group to work closely with localities, relevant agencies and state-owned enterprises in Vietnam’s energy and oil and gas sector, including Petrovietnam, Vietnam Electricity, as well as private enterprises, to carry out projects, including the construction of large-scale storage facilities in Vietnam. He also encouraged Vietnamese companies to strengthen cooperation with Novatek in gas liquefaction technology.
Novatek’s leadership expressed strong agreement and said the company would actively work with Vietnamese partners to speed up the projects and cooperation areas discussed.
PM Chinh described energy cooperation as a bright spot in Vietnam-Russia relations over more than 50 years. He thanked Russia for its support in helping Vietnam’s oil and gas sector, including Petrovietnam, develop into a multinational group. He noted that energy is an area where Russia has strengths and Vietnam has demand, and is a key pillar of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
In the current context of rapidly evolving, complex and unpredictable developments, he stressed the importance of strengthening ties with traditional partners and diversifying supply sources, markets, products and supply chains. Vietnam is also accelerating the application of science and technology and innovation to restructure and transform its energy sector.
Affirming that both sides share demand and ideas for cooperation, PM Chinh supported Novatek’s expansion of operations and investment in Vietnam in line with legal regulations, taking into account the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, traditional ties and existing cooperation outcomes, while ensuring effective cooperation and fair competition with other partners and investors.
Noting that Vietnam is reviewing legal regulations related to the power sector, the Government chief welcomed Novatek’s participation in developing LNG infrastructure projects, including storage terminals and gas-fired power plants in areas such as Hai Phong-Quang Ninh, Nam Du in Kien Giang province, Nghi Son in Thanh Hoa province and Ca Na in Khanh Hoa province, as well as supplying LNG steadily to the Vietnamese market, making full use of advantages and resolving difficulties in a timely manner.
