Party chief’s Laos visit underscores strategic cohesion after Party congresses
VOV.VN - Party General Secretary To Lam of Vietnam will pay a state visit to Laos on February 5, his first overseas trip in 2026 and his first since taking office for the Party’s 14th term, reaffirming the two countries’ commitment to deepening their special relationship and newly elevated strategic cohesion.
The visit comes days after Lao Party General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith concluded a trip to Vietnam in late January and shortly after both countries successfully held their National Party Congresses, setting out long-term development roadmaps.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos Nguyen Minh Tam said the reciprocal exchanges demonstrate the exceptionally high level of political trust and the consistent priority both sides place on their comprehensive cooperation.
“This visit once again affirms Vietnam’s steadfast policy of giving top priority to the great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation and strategic cohesion between Vietnam and Laos,” Ambassador Tam told the media.
He said the trip also reflects the close personal ties between the top leaders of the two Parties and States, as well as their shared determination to preserve and further strengthen a relationship forged in common struggles for independence and nurtured through generations.
According to the ambassador, political relations remain the core pillar guiding overall bilateral cooperation, while defence and security cooperation is a crucial foundation for safeguarding stability, public order and development in both countries.
He noted that the two sides aim to achieve a breakthrough in economic, trade, investment and infrastructure cooperation so that these areas become a strategic pillar commensurate with the scale and depth of the special relationship.
“Strategic connectivity should be strengthened in institutions, transport infrastructure, energy, logistics, telecommunications and tourism, alongside the implementation of key investment projects with spillover effects,” noted the diplomat.
The visit is also expected to advance the concept of a strategic cohesion which the two countries agreed to adopt in December 2025, expanding their long-standing framework of great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation.
Within this upgraded framework, the two sides seek to align development visions, policies and strategies, connect economic planning and development space, and deepen cooperation in education, training and human resource development, the ambassador said.
The diplomat added that culture, education and people-to-people exchanges are regarded as a long-term and sustainable foundation of bilateral ties, helping ensure continuity of the relationship across generations, particularly among youth.
In the current context of complex global and regional developments, he said frequent high-level contacts allow the two sides to exchange strategic views, coordinate positions on regional and international issues, and effectively implement agreements reached by senior leaders.
“The close and regular engagement between the top leaders of Vietnam and Laos provides a solid foundation for bilateral ties to continue developing in a substantive, effective and sustainable manner, bringing tangible benefits to the people of both countries,” said Ambassador Tam.
He expressed confidence that General Secretary To Lam’s visit would inject new momentum into bilateral cooperation and further translate political trust into concrete outcomes, contributing to peace, stability and development in the region.
