Party chief highlights security cooperation as pillar of Vietnam–Laos ties
VOV.VN - Party General Secretary To Lam has underscored that public security cooperation remains a key pillar of the Vietnam–Laos relationship and a strategic foundation for maintaining stability and social order in both countries.
At a reception in Hanoi on March 20 for a high-level delegation of the Lao Ministry of Public Security led by Minister Vanthong Kongmany, the Vietnamese leader stressed the need to further deepen coordination between the two forces amid evolving regional and global security challenges.
The meeting took place as both countries have recently concluded major political events, including Party congresses and elections of the National Assembly and People’s Councils, providing a new mandate to advance bilateral cooperation.
Party leader To Lam reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy of prioritising its “great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation” with Laos, describing the relationship as a strategic and vital asset for both nations’ long-term development.
He emphasised that security collaboration has played an essential role in safeguarding political stability and ensuring a favourable environment for socio-economic growth.
Given increasingly complex transnational security threats, the Party chief called on the two ministries to strengthen intelligence sharing, enhance coordination in law enforcement operations, and step up joint efforts to combat cross-border crimes, particularly drug trafficking.
He also highlighted the importance of preventing hostile forces from exploiting one country’s territory to undermine the other, while maintaining a peaceful, stable and cooperative border.
The Vietnamese leader also congratulated Laos on its significant achievements over 40 years of reform, expressing confidence that under the leadership of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, the country would continue to make further progress in implementing its socio-economic development strategy for 2026–2030.
For his part, Kongmany conveyed greetings from Lao Party General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith and expressed appreciation for Vietnam’s longstanding and effective support. He affirmed that the Lao Ministry of Public Security would continue to work closely with its Vietnamese counterpart to safeguard national security and social order under all circumstances.
Both sides agreed that enhancing cooperation between their security forces is not only a practical necessity but also a strategic imperative to preserve and further strengthen the special Vietnam–Laos relationship in the current context.
