Leaders of Vietnam and China affirm resolve to deepen strategic partnership

VOV.VN - Vietnam and China will strengthen the comprehensive strategic cooperation partnership and successfully build a joint community with a shared future, focusing on cooperation, cultural exchange, and mutual support for regional stability and development.

The agreement was reached during talks in Hanoi on April 15 between President Luong Cuong and Party General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping.

Cuong highlighted the significance of Xi’s visit which he said took place during the Year of Vietnam-China Humanistic Year 2025 and the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries (January 18, 1950 - 2025).

He emphasized the importance of maintaining frequent meetings between the top leaders of both parties and countries, which not only strengthens political trust and consolidates the traditional friendship, but also provides strategic direction for bilateral cooperation.

Cuong affirmed that Vietnam considers China a good neighbour, good friend, good comrade, and good partner, while expressing confidence that under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, led by Xi Jinping, China would successfully achieve its second centenary goal of becoming a modern socialist country.

In turn, Xi congratulated Vietnam on celebrating the 95th anniversary of the establishment of the Communist Party of Vietnam and expressed confidence that under the steadfast leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the country would successfully accomplish its goals, including preparing for and organising the upcoming 14th National Party Congress.

Both leaders highlighted the enduring traditional friendship between Vietnam and China, forged by Presidents Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam and Mao Zedong of China, and nurtured by generations of their successors. They stressed the need for future generations to preserve and further develop this valuable relationship.

Cuong reiterated Vietnam’s consistent commitment to strengthening and developing friendly relations with China, which is a strategic priority in Vietnam's foreign policy of independence, peace, and cooperation.

He outlined several key proposals for future cooperation between the two countries, including maintaining regular high-level exchanges; elevating substantial cooperation in areas such as science and technology, making it a new pillar, driver, and highlight of bilateral collaboration; and effectively implementing the Year of Vietnam-China Humanistic Exchange.

He proposed that the two countries increase communication and coordination at international and regional forums; and manage and resolve maritime disputes effectively based on mutual understanding, in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Meanwhile, Xi noted that this year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, as well as the Year of Vietnam-China Humanistic Exchange. He praised the achievements and progress made over the years, affirming that the relationship has evolved from traditional friendship to strategic cooperation aimed at building a shared future.

Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to maintaining high-level strategic exchanges with Vietnam, deepening cooperation across multiple sectors, and promoting initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the Two Corridors and One Economic Circle strategy.

China is ready to work with Vietnam to promote cooperation in transportation infrastructure, especially the three railway lines connecting the two countries, cross-border economic cooperation zones, and smart borders. In addition, it aims to expand imports of high-quality goods from Vietnam, advance collaboration in emerging fields like green development, 5G, and artificial intelligence, and enhance cultural exchanges to strengthen the bond between the two peoples.

Both sides agreed to foster people-to-people exchanges, including among young people, strengthen cooperation in areas such as education, culture, and tourism, and also ramp up cooperation in multilateral mechanisms such as APEC, ASEAN, and the Lancang-Mekong cooperation framework. Both sides pledged to effectively implement high-level common perceptions, properly managing disagreements, and expanding maritime cooperation.

After the talks, the Vietnamese President hosted a formal banquet in honour of the Chinese leader and his entourage.
