Chip manufacturer Nvidia to develop production base in Vietnam
VOV.VN - The world’s largest chip manufacturer Nvidia wants to set up a chip production centre in Vietnam to help develop a semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
At a reception hosted by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi on December 10, Huang said the production base would contribute to promoting startups, along with designing, developing supercomputers, and producing software of the future.
Nvidia is proud to enter into a partnership with Vietnam, contributing to the country’s digital future, said the CEO, adding the current positive development of Vietnam - US relations would facilitate cooperation in the field of semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
According to the CEO, Nvidia considers Vietnam an important market and the firm has so far poured US$250 million into the country’s investment projects.
He spoke highly of Vietnam’s vision for semiconductor and AI development, and affirmed that the Southeast Asian country would reap success in industry and technology development.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh for his part welcomed Huang’s visit, which he said would contribute to promoting the recently established comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and the US.
He emphasized that Vietnam and the US have agreed to make science, technology and innovation an important new pillar in their partnership, therefore, the two countries need to give priority to a number of potential fields, especially the semiconductor industry.
He said Vietnam has around 6,000 engineers and it aims to train 50,000 high-quality engineers till 2030, with a particular focus on those specializing in semiconductor chip design.
He proposed that Nvidia support Vietnam in formulating and implementing the national semiconductor strategy, as well as developing the semiconductor industry in all three stages of design, chip factory construction, packaging and testing.
Founded in 1993, Nvidia has more than 27,000 employees, and earned US$27 billion in revenue in the 2023 fiscal year.
