Vietnam semiconductor network makes its debut

VOV.VN - For the first time Vietnam has established a national semiconductor network which was inaugurated on October 29 as part of the Vietnam Semiconductor Summit.

The inception of the Vietnam Semiconductor Network is expected to gradually realize the development orientation of the semiconductor industry, making Vietnam a reliable partner in the regional and global semiconductor ecosystem, so as to enhance its position in the global value chain and modernize the economy.

“In the near future, we believe Vietnam will become a reliable partner and an important link in the global semiconductor manufacturing supply chain,” said Investment Minister Nguyen Chi Dung at the inauguration ceremony.

According to the minister, Vietnam has met all necessary conditions to develop the semiconductor industry. In particular, the Government is always keen to promote investment cooperation in developing the semiconductor industry.

“Vietnam has worked out a human resource development plan with the aim of generating approximately 50,000 engineers for this industry by 2030. It has been introducing a range of attractive investment incentives for companies in the semiconductor industry,” said Dung.

The minister noted that Vietnam currently boasts reputable research and training institutions in the field of semiconductors, such as Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Da Nang University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

The country also has large enterprises that have resources and are willing to cooperate in developing the semiconductor industry, such as Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel), Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), the Corporation for Financing Promoting Technology (FPT), and CMC Corporation.

In addition, Vietnam has been attracting more and more large firms in the semiconductor industry from the United States, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and European countries.

Notably, US President Joe Biden visited Vietnam in September 2023 during which the two countries lifted their ties to a level of comprehensive strategic partnership. The upgrade has enabled the two countries to enhance their cooperation in various fields, including in the semiconductor industry.

Linda Tan from SEMI Southeast Asia highly appreciated Vietnam’s model of a training and incubation center for semiconductor IC design and the formation of a training and research programme for the semiconductor industry at its universities.

In her opinion, Vietnam has increasingly attracted major foreign semiconductor firms, and sees huge opportunities to further develop this promising industry.

The SEMI vows to act as the leading role in emerging the semiconductor industry in the region, and the conference is a chance to enhance Vietnam’s position in the SEA semiconductor ecosystem in the global value chain, she said.

Currently Vietnam totally relies on semiconductor chip supply from abroad. Only two domestic firms - Viettel and FPT – get involved in the chip design stage, while foreign invested firms mainly engage in the stages of chip design processing, assembly, and testing.

Vietnam has established the National Innovation Center (NIC) and three high-tech parks in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang that are well equipped to welcome investors in the semiconductor industry.
