PM encourages Amkor Technology’s semiconductor manufacturing plan in Vietnam

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh encouraged Amkor Technology to continue cooperating and supporting Vietnam in developing the semiconductor manufacturing industry, while receiving Ji Rong Rip, vice president and CEO of Amkor Technology Inc, in Hanoi on October 12.

He briefed his guest on Vietnam’s semiconductor manufacturing industry development plan, saying the country is now formulating policies aimed at attracting the world’s leading semiconductor design and manufacturing enterprises, including those from the United States and the Republic of Korea, and increasing cooperation with local businesses to create conditions for them to improve their capacity and gradually engage in the global semiconductor industry value chain.

He also said Vietnam would focus on high-quality human resources training with the goal of training 50,000 personnel for the semiconductor manufacturing industry from now to 2030. It also aims to build an international semiconductor industry ecosystem with the participation of all parties, from the State to businesses, support organizations, universities, research institutes, and financial institutions.

Vietnam expects Amkor to provide support in policy formulation, technology transfer, human resources training, management capacity improvement, infrastructure investment, research and development, and semiconductor product design and testing, alongside cooperation with the Vietnam National Innovation Center (NIC), said the PM.

He proposed that the group expand investment earlier than scheduled, increase the localization rate, promote production, research and development of semiconductor chips, and help Vietnamese businesses to explore opportunities to engage in the group’s global semiconductor chip production chain.

The PM requested that Bac Ninh province where Amkor has decided to invest in coordinate closely with relevant ministries and agencies to promptly handle the group’s concerns, thereby facilitating its operation in the locality.

CEO Ji Rong Rip for his part highly appreciated Vietnam’s goodwill and affirmed the group would continue to make practical contributions to the country’s development, by for instance forming its semiconductor ecosystem in the country.

Amkor wants to employ highly qualified engineers and personnel in Vietnam, alongside mobilizing highly qualified engineers and experts from the group’s other facilities around the world, he assured his host.

He hailed Vietnam’s conducive investment climate, and said he would encourage other businesses to invest in the country and rev up Amkor’s operation in Vietnam, in an attempt to make Vietnam part of the group’s global network and attract global resources to the country.

Headquartered in the US, Amkor Technology Inc. has developed facilities in both the US and the RoK. It was the first business that manufactured semiconductor products in the RoK.

Currently, the group has 20 business and production locations globally with 30,000 employees in eight countries. It is providing more than 3,000 high-tech solutions for various industries, such as automation, telecommunications, entertainment, and computers. It has become a strategic manufacturing partner for many large technology firms globally.
