Top leader’s China visit yields comprehensive outcomes, sets direction for Vietnam-China ties
VOV.VN - The state visit to China by Party General Secretary and President To Lam, his spouse and a high-level Vietnamese delegation from April 14–17 has concluded with comprehensive and strategically significant outcomes, opening new directions for bilateral relations in the next phase of development.
According to Politburo member and Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung, the visit represents the most important diplomatic engagement of 2026 in Vietnam–China relations. It took place at a time when both countries are entering new stages of development with long-term strategic goals.
During the visit, Party General Secretary and President To Lam held talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping and met with other senior Chinese leaders. The two sides held in-depth discussions on their respective national developments as well as regional and international issues of mutual concern, while witnessing the signing of multiple cooperation agreements across key sectors.
High-level engagement reinforces political trust and strategic orientation
Both sides viewed the visit as the most important external engagement between the two Parties and countries in 2026, reflecting the high priority and political trust each attaches to Vietnam–China relations, as well as their shared desire to elevate ties to a new level in the evolving context, said Trung.
Vietnam reaffirmed that it consistently attaches great importance and gives top priority to developing relations with China, considering this an objective requirement and a strategic choice in its overall foreign policy as outlined at the 14th National Party Congress. For its part, China reiterated that it places Vietnam among the priorities in its neighborhood diplomacy.
A major highlight of the visit, according to the Foreign Minister, was the shared understanding reached by both leaders on further elevating bilateral ties. Building on political trust, the two sides agreed to strengthen high-level exchanges, improve the effectiveness of existing cooperation mechanisms, and expand substantive cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, science and technology, education and people-to-people exchanges.
Economic connectivity and emerging sectors take centre stage
Economic connectivity was identified as a central pillar of future cooperation. Both sides agreed to accelerate the implementation of key infrastructure projects, particularly in railways, expressways, logistics and the development of smart border gates. These areas are expected to create breakthroughs in trade facilitation, improve supply chain efficiency and enhance economic linkages between the two countries.
In addition to traditional sectors, both sides also emphasised the need to expand cooperation in emerging areas where Vietnam has demand and China has strengths, including digital transformation, science and technology, and green development.
Multilaterally, the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening coordination at international forums, contributing to a peaceful, stable environment conducive to national development.
Beyond political and economic engagement, the visit was marked by a wide range of cultural, educational and youth exchange activities, helping to reinforce the social foundation of bilateral relations. These exchanges, including the Vietnam – China Border People Exchange Festival 2026, are seen as essential in fostering mutual understanding and sustaining long-term cooperation between the two countries.
From commitments to concrete actions
Looking ahead, the priority will be to effectively implement the high-level agreements and shared understandings reached during the visit, Foreign Minister Trung said.
Relevant ministries, sectors and localities will develop concrete action plans, focusing on priority areas and ensuring that cooperation delivers practical results, with people’s interests at the centre.
Key infrastructure projects, including cross-border rail links, logistics systems and smart border gates, will be fast-tracked. At the same time, both sides will continue close coordination to translate commitments into concrete actions in a synchronised and effective manner.
As emphasised by the chief diplomat, the outcomes of the visit not only strengthen the foundation of traditional friendship between the two Parties, States and peoples, but also open up new opportunities for cooperation. They are expected to drive Vietnam–China relations toward a more substantive, effective and sustainable trajectory in the years ahead.
