Can Tho get-together marks 75 years of Vietnam – Russia diplomacy
VOV.VN - The Union of Friendship Organizations of Can Tho City, in coordination with the Consulate General of Russia in Ho Chi Minh City, held a get-together on February 28 evening to mark 75 years of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Russia (January 30, 1950 – 2025).

In her speech, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep, deputy head of the Can Tho administration, emphasized that Vietnam received great and invaluable support from the Soviet Union during the difficult years of its struggle for national independence and unification.
Russian experts stood side by side with Vietnam in building important projects, laying the foundation for national socio-economic development. The Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant and the Vietnam – Russia Oil and Gas JV Vietsovpetro are shining symbols of this friendship.
In addition, she said, thousands of Vietnamese officials trained in Russia have become leading experts, making significant contributions to the construction and defense of socialist Vietnam.
Taking the floor, Sadykov Timur Sirozhevich, Consul General of Russia in Ho Chi Minh City, acknowledged that Vietnam is playing an increasingly important role in the Asia-Pacific region and on the international stage. It has made remarkable progress in economic development, scientific research, and technological innovation, becoming a key player in global trade while fostering strong partnerships worldwide.
Furthermore, he said, through Friendship Associations, the people-to-people diplomacy between the two countries has achieved significant milestones. Vietnamese culture is becoming widely recognized in Russia through cultural exchanges and the translation of Vietnamese literary works into Russian.
Similarly, Vietnamese individuals who studied in the former Soviet Union and present-day Russia actively participate in friendship events dedicated to Russia’s most important celebrations, such as Victory Day and the October Revolution Day.
According to the diplomat, both countries are currently strengthening cooperation in energy, nuclear energy, science, education, defense, and security. Their two-way trade turnover increased by 24% last year, exceeding US$4 billion. In 2024 alone, various provinces and cities of both countries conducted multiple visits and promoted cooperation in many fields.
“We hope to launch new joint projects between Russian and Vietnamese localities, particularly with Can Tho, in the near future,” he said.
Shortly afterwards, participating delegates were treated to a special art programme in praise of the traditional friendship, solidarity and camaraderie between the two countries.
