Cambodia marks Khmer Rouge’s fall, highlights Vietnam’s support
VOV.VN - Cambodia on January 7 marked the 47th anniversary of the overthrow of the Khmer Rouge regime, underscoring the decisive role of the Kampuchean United Front for National Salvation and the invaluable assistance of Vietnamese volunteer forces in rescuing the country from genocide.
In a solemn message commemorating the January 7, 1979 event, Senate President and Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) leader Hun Sen recalled the traumatic period of three years, eight months and 20 days under the Pol Pot regime, during which Cambodian society was devastated, basic human rights were stripped away and the nation was pushed to the brink of annihilation.
Facing that catastrophe, Hun Sen said, the Kampuchean United Front for National Salvation emerged and received timely and strong support from neighbouring Vietnam. He stressed that Cambodians would forever remember the noble sacrifices of the heroes and fighters of the National Salvation Front, along with the great assistance provided by Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in overthrowing the brutal regime.
The CPP leader said the January 7 milestone opened the door for Cambodia’s gradual recovery from the ashes of war, allowing the country to enter a new era of independence, freedom, democracy and development. He added that the combination of the Cambodian people’s self-reliance and support from friendly nations had enabled the country to achieve comprehensive peace, rapid economic growth and improved living standards.
Reflecting on recent progress, Hun Sen noted that in 2025 Cambodia recorded significant achievements under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Manet, who is implementing Phase I of the Pentagonal Strategy, despite ongoing global uncertainties.
He said the spirit of January 7 continues to guide Cambodia under the leadership of the CPP, calling on the public to remember history and the crimes committed against humanity and cultural heritage in order to safeguard lasting peace.
The CPP leader’s renewed acknowledgment of Vietnam’s role in Cambodia’s liberation reaffirmed the long-standing friendship and solidarity between the two countries, which is considered a vital foundation for regional stability and development.
