Deputy Defence Minister wants cooperation in addressing war consequences

Deputy Defence Minister Nguyen Chi Vinh has called for strengthened cooperation between Vietnam and the US army as well as the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in the settlement of war consequences during separate meetings in Hanoi on July 6.

Meeting with a delegation of US congressmen led by Michael Rogers, Chairman of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee under the House Armed Services Committee in the US House of Representatives, Vinh said the US and Vietnam are recording strong and firm development in their defence cooperation, and there remain numerous opportunities to reinforce ties in this field.

In the time ahead, the two armies need to pay more attention to cooperation in the settlement of war and dioxin consequences and the return of war mementos. These are meaningful activities which will help open up a broader future for Vietnam-US defence cooperation, he noted.

The deputy minister and US congressmen also compared their viewpoints on each country’s foreign and defence policies, bilateral defence cooperation potential, and some regional and international issues of common concern.

Receiving KOICA Country Director in Vietnam Kim Jin-oh, Deputy Minister Vinh congratulated his guest on the latter’s appointment to the position, expressing his hope that Kim will actively contribute to relations between Vietnam and the Republic of Korea, as well as between the two countries’ armies.

He appreciated KOICA’s assistance and asked for more support to Vietnam’s socio-economic development. He also urged the agency to bolster ties with the Vietnamese Defence Ministry in addressing war consequences.

Kim Jin-oh said KOICA and the Defence Ministry of Vietnam are actively implementing the first project on resolving post-war bomb and mine consequences. He affirmed that he will exert every effort to ensure the project’s success and turn it into a symbol of the effective and long-term cooperation between his agency and the ministry.
