At 3am every day, hundreds of people gather at Nam Son landfill in Soc Son district, Hanoi to search for scrap and other items that can be sold.
Nam Son landfill has a total area of about 83.5 hectares, including 53.49 hectares for waste burial. |
Every day hundreds of trucks carry rubbish from Hanoi center to the landfill. The peak hour at the landfill is from 5pm to midnight. |
At 3am, this place is very crowded, with 800 to over 1,000 people waste collectors. |
Whenever a truck discharges waste to the landfill, dozens of people rush to collect scrap, plastic and other things that can still be used. |
Under the provisions of the landfill, these people are waste collection workers who have to register with the landfill management board. They mustwear safety working clothes. |
The smell is very bad. |
Waste collectors work from midnight to early morning in the polluted atmosphere. |
A waste collector said she and her husband earn VND100,000-VND150,000 (US$5-US$7) a day. |
Waste collectors are people who live around the landfill. This job brings much higher income than farming, their previous job. However their health is in danger because of pollution. |
