Vietnam Airlines told to fly higher to expand global reach

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, while attending a meeting on June 1 to mark 30 years of Vietnam Airlines, outlined key directives to guide the national flag carrier’s development in the new era.

In his speech, Chinh acknowledged Vietnam Airlines' significant contributions to national development over the years, especially during the recent COVID-19 pandemic by transporting medical equipment, vaccines, and food supplies to affected areas. He praised the company’s strong recovery in revenue and profit post-pandemic, reflecting the resilience and adaptability of its workforce.

Statistics show in 2024, Vietnam Airlines achieved consolidated revenue of nearly VND113 trillion (approx. US$4.5 billion), a 21% increase, with record after-tax profits of over VND7.9 trillion. In Q1 2025, its pre-tax profits continued to grow, reaching nearly VND3.6 trillion.

According to the PM, the national flag carrier must continue to innovate and fulfill its role as a "soft border" connecting Vietnam to the world, not only through transportation but also through economic, cultural, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.

“Vietnam Airlines must fly high, reach far, and stretch across the five continents. Wherever it lands, the soft border of our nation extends there,” he said.

To achieve these goals, the Prime Minister suggested that the airline accelerate digital transformation, innovate its business model, invest in sustainable and environmentally friendly growth, and align with the national green growth strategy.

He urged the airline to fast-track its comprehensive restructuring, make efficient use of government support in compliance with regulations, develop modern infrastructure, and improve service quality.

He stressed the need for the company to build a high-quality workforce, adopt scientific and modern management, fully embrace digital transformation, and reduce costs.

The goal is for Vietnam Airlines to keep pace with and eventually surpass other airlines globally, Chinh said.

During the ceremony, the Prime Minister awarded Vietnam Airlines a Certificate of Merit from the Government in recognition of its outstanding achievements and contributions to the country’s socio-economic development and international integration.
