Sun Group launches construction of Phan Thiet Airport in Vietnam
VOV.VN - Sun Group on April 27 broke ground on the Phan Thiet Airport project in Lam Dong province, marking a major step toward boosting air connectivity and tourism in the south-central region.
Located in Mui Ne ward, the airport project has a total investment of over VND3.9 trillion (approximately US$155 million) and covers nearly 75 hectares. It is designed to meet ICAO 4E standards, allowing operations of wide-body aircraft, with an initial capacity of around 2 million passengers per year.
The project moved from investment approval to groundbreaking in just five months and is scheduled for completion within two years, highlighting effective coordination between local authorities and the private sector in developing strategic infrastructure.
At the heart of the project is an 18,000-square-meter passenger terminal inspired by Champa culture. The design draws from the iconic Poshanu towers, incorporating traditional corbel brick techniques, layered arches and earthy red tones to create a distinctive architectural identity.
The terminal’s 13-tier roof structure symbolises a complete cycle and a transition to a new phase of development, reflecting aspirations for growth and connectivity. Architectural elements such as upward-pointing arches and layered lighting effects aim to create a dynamic, immersive space for travelers.
This marks one of the first airport projects in Vietnam to integrate cultural storytelling into modern infrastructure design, with the goal of showcasing local identity alongside functionality.
The airport will include six aircraft parking lots accommodating both Code E wide-body and Code C narrow-body aircraft, along with a 45-meter air traffic control tower equipped with advanced navigation and weather monitoring systems.
Supporting infrastructure, including power, water, internal transport and security systems, is being developed in line with international standards to ensure efficient and safe operations.
Initially, the airport will serve domestic flights while also being capable of handling non-scheduled international services, opening opportunities to attract direct international visitors to Mui Ne–Phan Thiet.
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, Minister of Construction Tran Hong Minh described the project as a significant milestone for a region with strong tourism potential, praising the role of private enterprises in developing large-scale infrastructure.
Once operational, the airport is expected to significantly reduce travel time from major cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, and enhance connectivity with key destinations like Phu Quoc.
