Seminar highlights Brazil export prospects for Vietnamese businesses

VOV.VN - The Ho Chi Minh City Investment and Trade Promotion Centre (ITPC) in coordination with the Vietnam Trade Office in Brazil, held a seminar on Brazil’s export potential on April 21 to help local businesses gain market insights, connect with partners, and expand into this potential market.

Experts participating in the event noted that Brazil is currently Vietnam’s largest trading partner in Latin America, while Vietnam ranks among Brazil’s leading partners in Southeast Asia. Bilateral trade has maintained strong growth, reaching approximately US$8 billion in 2025, including around US$2.7 billion in Vietnam’s exports to Brazil.

However, analysts noted that this figure remains modest compared to Brazil’s annual import demand of US$250–300 billion, due to factors such as geographical distance, high logistics costs, and complex technical standards.

Both sides are aiming to raise bilateral trade to US$15 billion by 2030, marking a new phase of economic cooperation.

According to Le Anh Hoang, deputy director of ITPC, ongoing geopolitical volatility and disruptions to global supply chains are prompting the need to diversify export markets. He emphasised that Brazil’s scale and economic resilience make it an attractive destination for Vietnamese exporters.

As Vietnam’s leading economic hub, contributing 21% of the country’s total export turnover, Ho Chi Minh City has pledged continued support for businesses in enhancing competitiveness and exploring new growth opportunities.

To advance this effort, ITPC will organise a business delegation to attend the APAS Show, the region’s largest food and retail exhibition, scheduled from May 18 to 21 in Brazil. The event is expected to facilitate deeper penetration of Vietnamese goods into Brazil’s domestic distribution networks.

Meanwhile, Pham Hong Trang, Vietnamese Trade Counselor in Brazil said, the country serves not only as a large consumer market but also as a strategic gateway to the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR).

She highlighted strong growth potential in key export sectors such as seafood, processed foods, textiles, and electronic components. However, she cautioned that exporters must navigate stringent technical barriers and trade defense measures.

Vietnamese goods also face high tariffs as the country is not a member of MERCOSUR, along with mandatory Portuguese labeling and complex certification requirements.

Dionathan Santos, executive president of the Brazil–Vietnam Chamber of Commerce, described Brazil as the world’s eighth-largest economy, with a GDP of US$2.4 trillion. He advised Vietnamese businesses to make use of public databases to verify partners and begin with small orders to gradually explore the market.

With a population of over 200 million, Brazil is the largest economy in Latin America and a dynamic, high-consumption market relatively insulated from direct impacts of global geopolitical tensions.
