Vietnam, Brazil push cooperation in agriculture, energy and biotechnology

VOV.VN - A delegation from the Embassy of Vietnam in Brazil led by Ambassador Bui Van Nghi paid a working visit to Maranhão state from February 25-28 to conduct field surveys, promote investment and trade cooperation, and enhance strategic linkages between Vietnam and Brazil’s Northeast region.

The visit focused on the cities of Davinópolis and Imperatriz and surrounding areas. During a meeting in Davinópolis, Mayor Zé Pequeno said Vietnam is a strategic partner in the locality’s new development orientation, particularly in production technology and the distribution of goods to Asian and ASEAN markets.

The city aims to build a dry port into an international logistics service area and proposed signing a “sister city” agreement with a Vietnamese locality to strengthen  business exchanges, workforce training and the sharing of management experience.

Ambassador Bui Van Nghi said the visit to Davinópolis, a locality with strong agricultural potential and a strategic maritime advantage in Northeast Brazil,  demonstrates determination to enhance mutual understanding, build trust and advance substantive cooperation between localities of the two countries in high-tech agriculture, deep processing, port logistics and green transition.

Regarding bilateral ties, the Vietnamese diplomat  said that since diplomatic relations were established in 1989, Vietnam and Brazil have continuously consolidated and developed relations with a high level of political trust.

The relationship was elevated to a Strategic Partnership in November 2024, alongside Brazil’s recognition of Vietnam as a market economy and the two sides opening their agricultural markets to each other. Two-way trade reached US$7.76 billion in 2025. Cooperation is considered complementary and still holds ample room for development, particularly as Mercosur has launched negotiations on a Preferential Trade Agreement with Vietnam.

Amid global supply chain restructuring, Ambassador Bui Van Nghi affirmed that cooperation potential in high-tech agriculture, deep processing, port logistics and green transition remains considerable, and pledged that the embassy will continue to act as a bridge to promote concrete, effective and sustainable cooperation projects in the period ahead.

Authorities of Maranhão state pledged to  ensure infrastructure for the dry port project, including allocating 20 million reais (US$3.9 million) to build a connecting road.

Leaders of the state’s industry and trade sector proposed a “round-trip cargo” strategy to optimize container costs, increase local value addition through the development of footwear and deep-processing factories, and capitalize on the North-South railway system.

The delegation also held working sessions with Maranhão Governor Carlos Brandão and local businesses on agricultural trade, transport cooperation and tourism.

Notable plans include the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from sweet potatoes; expansion of the Maiti sugar-ethanol plant; and development of gypsum, sisal fiber and a 250-hectare warehousing center.

Businesses expressed their wish to establish direct trading channels with Vietnamese partners, aiming for long-term, sustainable and mutually beneficial cooperation.
