Great potential for Vietnam – US cooperation in semiconductor industry

VOV.VN - Both Vietnam and the United States hold huge potential for cooperation in the semiconductor industry, artificial intelligence (AI) and other high –tech industries, heard a workshop in Hanoi on December 11.

Addressing the workshop, CEO Jensen Huang of Nvidia, the world’s largest chip manufacturer based in California, USA, highly appreciated Vietnam’s great potential and opportunities in the semiconductor and AI industries, especially the country’s human resources in this field.

He said AI and chip manufacturing are the two vital industries for the prosperous development of countries, and Vietnam is making good preperations to develop these industries.

Vietnam is a partner for Nvidia, and the firm will further expand its existing partnership with Vietnam, said Huang, adding Nvidia would turn Vietnam into its second homeland and establish its legal entity in the country.

According to the CEO, Vietnam has good education and infrastructure, and it’s now time to train AI engineers and encourage Vietnamese experts and engineers abroad to return home.

Nvidia is ready to cooperate with Vietnam to improve AI skills and infrastructure, stressed Huang.

Meanwhile, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung pointed to the fact that Vietnam has a number of advantages to develop the semiconductor and AI industries, and he vowed to facilitate Nvidia’s operations in Vietnam.

He requested that Nvidia undertake semiconductor and AI investment projects, build research and development centres and laboratories for semiconductor chip products design and development, and train human resources in the fields of semiconductors and AI in Vietnam.

At a reception hosted by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi on December 10, Huang said Nvidia wants to set up a chip production centre in Vietnam to help develop a semiconductor and AI ecosystem. He affirmed that Nvidia is proud to enter into a partnership with Vietnam, contributing to the country’s digital future.

During his recent working trip to the US, Chinh called at Nvidia where he exchanged views with Huang on the global trend of semiconductor chip and AI development, as well as the open potential for cooperation between the firm and Vietnam.

Founded in 1993, Nvidia has more than 27,000 employees, and earned US$27 billion in revenue in the 2023 fiscal year. The firm considers Vietnam an important market and it has so far poured US$250 million into the country’s investment projects.

Vietnam and the US released a joint statement on lifting their relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership during President Joe Biden’s visit to Vietnam in September 2023. In the document, the two sides emphasized their breakthrough cooperation in innovation and high technology, including semiconductor chips and AI. Vietnam has been invited by the US Government to engage in semiconductor initiatives within the framework of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
