Vietnamese language studies promoted at Brunei’s leading university
VOV.VN - Politburo member and Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung of Vietnam on April 28 visited the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and presented a Vietnamese book collection to the university, as part of his working trip to Brunei for the 25th ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting.
The initiative marks a step in strengthening cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the two countries, contributing to the implementation of the Vietnam–Brunei Comprehensive Partnership Action Plan for 2023–2027.
At the meeting, UBD leaders, lecturers and students of the Vietnamese language programme showcased academic achievements through poster exhibitions and presentations by advanced-level students.
Addressing the event, Minister Le Hoai Trung described language as a “bridge of knowledge” and a key to understanding a nation’s culture and history. He expressed pride that Vietnamese is currently the only ASEAN language taught at UBD and one of the university’s eight elective foreign languages.
In recognition of his contributions, the minister presented a certificate of merit to Dr Tran Trong Nghia for his role in maintaining and developing Vietnamese language teaching at the university.
He also suggested upgrading the current programme into a full Vietnamese studies major, while encouraging increased exchanges of lecturers and students, as well as the regular organisation of cultural events such as the Vietnamese Language and Culture Day.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam supports UBD through the provision of teaching materials, expert coordination and the organisation of exchange activities, he affirmed.
Launched in 2022, the Vietnamese language programme at UBD has become a notable educational highlight, attracting between 60 and 90 students per semester.
Its success is attributed to interactive and creative teaching methods, including cooking classes, simulated real-life scenarios such as restaurant settings, learning numbers through Vietnamese currency, and exploring traditional culture through Dong Ho folk paintings.
Beyond language acquisition, the programme has also opened up opportunities for students to pursue internships and careers with joint Vietnam–Brunei enterprises, further strengthening bilateral ties.
