Tet cake making event held in Russia to welcome Lunar New Year 2026

VOV.VN - The Embassy of Vietnam in Russia on February 12 organised a traditional bánh chưng (square sticky rice cake) wrapping gathering to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year (Year of the Horse 2026).

The activity was attended by spouses of embassy staff and representatives of Vietnamese agencies in Russia. It aimed to honour Vietnam’s longstanding cultural traditions, preserve national identity, and strengthen community bonds among overseas Vietnamese living in Russia.

As the Lunar New Year approaches, the embassy courtyard was filled with the familiar colours and aromas of Tet, including the green of dong leaves, the golden hue of mung beans, and the fragrant stickiness of glutinous rice. From early morning, participants gathered to prepare ingredients and wrap the cakes together, creating a warm and festive atmosphere.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Dang Minh Khoi emphasised that maintaining traditional activities such as bánh chưng making not only helps overseas Vietnamese preserve their cultural heritage but also fosters solidarity and connection among embassy staff and the wider Vietnamese community.

He expressed hope that the meaningful values of Tet would continue to be upheld and passed on to younger generations.

Sharing her feelings at the gathering, Nguyen Thi Thuy Duong, a participant, said the event holds special meaning for her family.

“This is my third Tet in Russia, and each year we join the embassy’s bánh chưng wrapping programme. When I lived in Vietnam, work kept me away from home, so I rarely had the chance to make bánh chưng with my family. Taking part here helps ease homesickness and reconnect us with the spirit of traditional Tet,” she said.

The event concluded in a spirit of joy and unity. The neatly wrapped square cakes, a traditional symbol of reunion, prosperity and good fortune, reflected both the enduring cultural roots of Vietnam and the warmth of community life abroad.
