Free classical concert at Hanoi Cathedral showcases European chamber music

VOV.VN - A free classical concert will take place at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, offering audiences in Hanoi a unique journey through European chamber music shaped by folk traditions and national identity.

The event, titled “Echoes of Tradition: From Bohemia to Spain”, is co-organised by the Embassy of Spain in Vietnam and Hanoi Cathedral. Scheduled for 8:00 PM on May 7, the 60-minute concert will feature a performance by the Helmantica Quartet from Spain.

The programme explores how folk culture and national identity have influenced European chamber music, bringing together works that blend classical traditions with distinctive regional elements.

Highlights include Piano Quartet No. 2 by Antonin Dvorak, which combines classical structure with rhythmic and melodic variations inspired by Czech folk music, reflecting the composer’s lyricism and vitality.

The concert continues with Piano Quartet in A minor, Op. 67 by Joaquin Turina, a work that fuses Andalusian musical traditions with influences from his training period in Paris, making it one of the most representative pieces of Spanish chamber music.

The programme concludes with a tribute to Manuel de Falla on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary, featuring excerpts from his renowned work El amor brujo, including Pantomima and Danza ritual del fuego. These pieces highlight his distinctive musical language, blending folk traditions with modern expression.

The selected works illustrate how Spanish composers, inspired by broader European musical traditions, developed a unique voice that gained international recognition through rich tonal diversity and aesthetic identity.

On this occasion, the Vietnam National Academy of Music will host a second performance on May 9, along with accompanying activities such as a masterclass and exchanges with students and faculty members.
