When the accident happened at around 5pm, rock miners of Hoang Anh Investment and Trading Services Co. Ltd., were laying mines to exploit rocks at a quarry in Na U commune.

Mines suddenly exploded, causing a large amount of rocks to fall, burying three workers at the site.

Rescue workers were deployed shortly afterwards. The bodies of the two workers, with one living in Dien Bien province and the other in Ninh Binh province, were pulled out of the debris two hours after the blast.

A camp was erected at the foot of the mountain for the search. However, rescue workers had to suspend the search for the third worker until the morning of June 2 due to large amounts of fallen rocks and poor visibility at night

The stone quarry owned by Hoang Anh Investment and Trading Services Co. Ltd., was suspended to serve investigations.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning suddenly were believed to cause the mine blast.

Hoang Anh has been licensed to exploit rocks in the region. The quarry is located near the Vietnam - Laos border, about 10 km from the center of Na U commune. In 2015, a rockslide happened at its mine, burying excavators.
