The new patient, a resident of Ho Chi Minh City, is a student studying in the United Kingdom.
The 20-year-old student boarded Vietnam Airlines VN0050 flight from London to Can Tho airport in southern Vietnam on March 22.
Upon landing in Vietnam, he was placed in quarantine at a concentrated quarantine camp of a military school in Bac Lieu province.
Having a high body temperature and a sore throat, the student had samples taken for testing, and the results showed he had contracted the deadly SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes the COVID-19 disease.
Those who were staying with the student at the quarantine camp moved into a restricted area for observation, though they have yet to show any typical flu-like symptoms.
This is the first time Vietnam has recorded only one COVID-19 case in a day for the past month.
Statistics show more than 10 infection cases were reported each in the last 10 days of March, while March 22 alone saw a record high of 29 cases confirmed.
Also on April 5, a COVID-19 patient in Quang Nam province was released from hospital after making a full recovery, raising the total number of discharged patients in the country to 91.
Currently, 150 other coronavirus patients are being treated at 21 health facilities across the country. Among them, 45 patients have tested negative for the deadly virus.
