Custom officials launched a search whilst noticing a suspicious car passing through the checkpoint and discovered a total of 2,009,800 Chinese yuan, equivalent to VND7 billion, in the vehicle.

The suspects were identified as Chinese nationals Hu Hua Gang, 30, and Li Chun, 32.

The two men confessed to hiring a car with the purpose of transporting the currency into Quang Ninh province. Upon being questioned, they also failed to provide proof of the money’s origin.

Customs officials handed over both suspects along with the money to police forces in Mong Cai city for further investigation.

A similar case occurred in January when the Mong Cai Customs Branch of the Quang Ninh Customs Department also arrested two Chinese nationals. The pair had been illegally transporting 75,600 Chinese yuan and VND12.5 million without declaring it across the Mong Cai International Border Gate.
