From November 17-18, the PM attended and joined discussions at numerous closed-door meetings, working luncheons with APEC leaders, and dialogues with the International Monetary Fund, leaders of 14 Pacific island states, the APEC Business Advisory Council. He also held bilateral meetings with the PMs of New Zealand, Vanuatu, Thailand, the head of the Hong Kong (China) Special Administrative Region, and representatives from the US-APEC Business Alliance, including several major US firms investing in Vietnam.
At the meetings, the Vietnamese PM made strong calls for promoting trade liberalisation and investment, supporting the World Trade Organisation, economic connectivity, sustainable and inclusive development, and switch to digital economy.
He called on APEC to play a vanguard role and foster innovative initiatives, turning Asia-Pacific into a global technological hub.
APEC needs to create new driving forces for growth, trade, investment, connectivity and inclusive development, he said, stressing that only by so doing can APEC affirm its position as the leading economic forum in the region.
As the top regional economic connectivity mechanism, APEC needs to actively promote existing cooperation mechanisms such as the ASEAN Economic Community, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), towards forming a Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP), he said.
The PM proposed stronger and more effective cooperation to strengthen structural reform to narrow development gap among APEC economies, effectively implement the initiatives “APEC Cross-Border E-Commerce Facilitation Framework”, “APEC Internet and Digital Economy Roadmap” and “Digital Economy Action Plan”, invest in digital infrastructure, improve the organisation and governance skills in both public and private sectors, and offer mutual support for digital economic growth.
During a dialogue with ABAC corporate representatives, PM Phuc informed that the Vietnamese legislature approved the CPTPP on November 12, 2018, which demonstrated the country’s determination to continue with comprehensive reform, active and proactive integration into the world, and support open, free and rule-based trade and investment up to high standards.
ABAC members congratulated Vietnam on its CPTPP ratification, affirming that it is a great opportunity to attract more foreign investors to the country.
The PM’s attendance at the 26th APEC Leaders’ Meeting on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Vietnam’s membership in APEC has improved Vietnam’s stature in the forum, affirming its active efforts and high sense of responsibility for shaping regional economic linkage, contributing to fostering the joint vision on an Asia-Pacific Economic Community of peace, stability and prosperity.
